Understanding Remedy Reactions in Homeopathy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Clients often want to know whether there are going to be side-effects from the remedy. \u00a0What will a remedy do? \u00a0And, what does this or that reaction to a remedy mean? \u00a0Confusion about a remedy reaction is understandable since they are vastly different than reactions to conventional drugs. \u00a0The key thing to remember is that a good (meaning resonant) remedy triggers a curative (healing) response by the body itself \u2014 it does not force a suppression of the symptoms of a disease. \u00a0The remedy just provides a stimulus, the body is inspired to do whatever it needs to fix itself. Moreover, this may vary not only from person to person, but even vary\u00a0in the same person at different points of time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A homeopathic remedy does not produce chemical side-effects like conventional drugs. \u00a0But, it does produce reactions, otherwise how would you know whether it is doing anything? \u00a0To a homeopath, remedy reactions represent the response of the vital force to the information received in the form of the energetic pattern of the substance in the remedy. \u00a0S\/he understands the meaning and significance of these reactions in a much more profound way than conventional doctors do. \u00a0As I often tell my clients \u2013 when I suggest the first remedy and you take it, I start a conversation with your vital force. \u00a0It responds back with reactions in the form of changing symptoms, guiding me, giving me insight. \u00a0It speaks loud and clear. \u00a0Even if there is NO reaction, still tells me something \u2013 either the remedy has no resonsnce or the potency is too low. The art of making good remedy suggestions is in understanding the \u201cvoice of the vital force and and identifying its greatest complaint\u201d (as renowned homeopath Karen Allen aptly says).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broadly speaking, reactions from a good remedy can be of three types \u2013 1) Aggravation of the existing symptoms.  2) Return of Old symptoms.  3) New symptoms.  There is also another remedy reaction that I see very often that I want to mention here, 4) Cleansing Response, where the vital force decides to get rid of some toxins, and boost the immune system in the process.  These are usually quick and short lasting, and dissipate in a few days,and usually follows with a more vibrant state of health.  Fevers, colds, diarrhea, skin rashes, emotional outbursts<\/strong> such as crying or anger, etc.  Some of these take the form of an acute disease such as a viral or bacterial infection<\/strong>.  It is important to understand these for what they are, and not be quick to initiate a suppressive treatment for these acute symptoms.  Of course, you can definitely take some steps to keep yourself comfortable, and support the organs while the body completes this important healing step.  Below are suggestions of what to do for some common scenarios, that actually apply to any acute disease state.  The best possible scenario in terms of remedy reactions, of course, is 5) where symptoms simply ameliorate without a fuss, and I usually see this happening more consistently in the younger age group, with a great diet (unprocessed whole foods), and who have not received too many suppressive treatments in the past.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Support uncomfortable remedy reactions, including acute infections<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In case of 1) and 2) above, usually you need to do nothing, and just ride it out.  If there is an exacerbation of existing symptoms, it is usually short lived, and things should get back to normal within a short period of time.  In the case of 3) where new symptoms show up, that usually indicates that a susceptibility has been unmasked and the body may<\/em> need the support of a different remedy or strategy to further process its healing.  It\u2019s advisable to report these symptoms at the appropriate time.  Keep a journal if you like. If any symptom becomes unmanageable or if something unexpected comes along, stop<\/strong> the remedy plan immediately, and seek guidance or whatever intervention seems called for at that moment.  The art and skill of the consultant (or practitioner of homeopathy) lies in interpreting the symptoms that come up following a remedy, as these are clues that the vital force gives us to show in what way it needs our help and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the case of 4) when acute symptoms develop following a remedy, my go to for these remedy reactions are\u00a0CELL SALTS, GEMMO extracts, VITAMIN C and Zinc,\u00a0or sometimes low potency homeopathic organ supports or an individually selected remedy based on the presenting acute symptoms, if all the other stuff does not clear it up. \u00a0Some cell salts to keep on hand are \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ferr Phos 6x + Calc Phos 6x<\/strong> \u2013 Fevers
Kali Mur 6x<\/strong> \u2013 Colds with clear to white dicharge
Kali Sulph 6x<\/strong> \u2013 Also, colds, but if the discharge has turned yellow
Nat Phos 6x<\/strong> \u2013 For digestive disorders
Nat Sulph 6x<\/strong> \u2013 Generally for liver, lung and kidney support.
Kali Phos 6x<\/strong> \u2013 Nerve tonic, helpful for calming, helps sleep<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cell salts are available in Vitamin Shoppe, and other local natural health food stores, or online at Amazon. Hyland\u2019s<\/a> is a common brand for cell salts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A very useful cell salt handbook that I recommend to parents with young children is the \u2013 Homeopathic Cell Salt Remedies: Healing with Nature\u2019s Twelve Mineral Compounds \u2013 Lennon and Rolfe<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have to keep just one Gemmo tincture in your natural medicine cabinet, then I\u2019d suggest that to be Black Currant (Ribes Nigrum)<\/strong>.  Great for any acute. Gemmos may be bought from \u2013  https:\/\/store.laurenhubele.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some useful gemmos are as follows \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dog Rose, Common Alder, Black Currant<\/strong> \u2013 Used together to drain the mucus membranes and provide effective support during the duration of the cold.  Dog Rose is a great immune system booster for children who tend to get frequent colds.  Great for seasonal allergies.
Sea buckthorn<\/strong> \u2013 First signs of sickness, cold, flu etc.  Boosts immune system, also useful for convalescence.  It\u2019s rich in Vitamin C.
Black Honeysuckle<\/strong> \u2013 for the start of a cold, for scratchy throat, and also for thinning the mucus if it gets too dry or thick.
Lithy\/Wayfaring tree<\/strong> \u2013 For coughs, wheezing or asthmatic respiration.
Hazel<\/strong> \u2013 Pneumonia or deep coughs.
Fig , Walnut<\/strong> \u2013 For indigestion and digestive disturbances.
Oak<\/strong> \u2013 For Flu like symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VITAMIN C<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I recommend following\u00a0Dr. Suzanne Humphries\u2019 guidelines on the use of Vitamin C<\/a>\u00a0for acute infections.\u00a0 Basically, I recommend keeping an assortment of Vitamin C in your natural medicine cabinet, natural as well as synthetic. I am very selective in choosing interventions when dealing with acute infections, and my goal is to help the microbiome \/ immune system successfully navigate, negotiate, integrate the infectious agent into it\u2019s profile, thereby diversifying and strengthening it in the long run.\u00a0 Therefore, I do not recommend overwhelming the system with a ton of supplements, vitamins, essential oils (some of these may actually damage the microbiome), herbs, etc.\u00a0 But, high doses of Vitamin C is one that I have cautiously allowed into the repertoire because of its ability to relieve oxidative stress, and its widespread use in detoxification in the orthomolecular community.\u00a0\u00a0With biochemic cell\/tissue salts, and the gemmos, the goal is the same\u00a0\u2013 that is to support the body at the physiological level while it goes through a cleansing cycle during an acute infection.\u00a0 Thus, here are the different kinds of Vitamin C you can combine and use, according to your needs and circumstances \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Micro-C<\/strong> \u2013 https:\/\/vimergy.com\/products\/micro-c<\/a>\u2013 My most recommended brand for all supplements is the Vimergy brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I prefer whole food based supplements, but haven\u2019t found negative effects from using the synthetic ones listed below and therefore recommend these as well. ( I don\u2019t know if that is going to change in the future.)  The KEY is to use a DEACIDIFIED form of Vitamin C (do not use ascorbic acid) \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nutribiotic Sodium Ascorbate Powder<\/strong> (available on Amazon<\/a>) \u2013 This is a buffered form of vitamin C and is preferable over plain Ascorbic Acid for high doses, since it is not as acidic.  It\u2019s the most cost-effective of the list, and does the job quite well in all cases of acute infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LivOn Lypo-spheric Vitamin C<\/strong> (available on Amazon<\/a>) \u2013 This is the best one to administer to infants and babies, you can simply take the paste on your finger and swipe it on the inside cheek of your child.  Also good for topical applications, and for travel purposes, as these come in little sachets that can be used right out of the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sufficient-C\u00ae High Dose Non-GMO Vitamin C<\/strong> \u2013 Lemon Peach Immune-Ade drink mix (link from Amazon<\/a>) \u2013 This is probably the best tasting of them all, and therefore useful for picky older children, and teenagers.  Recommend it for the college dorm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dosing<\/em>: It can vary.  In the midst of an infection, one can take up to 1000 mg every two hours, until symptoms improve.  You will know if you are taking too much, if your stomach starts to rumble and you get a flush of diarrhea.  If that happens it is a one time thing, and not like the diarrhea that will keep you going into the bathroom all day long.  Ideally, it is recommended to maintain a dose that will produce two loose stools in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIRST AID CREAMS<\/strong> \u2013 I recommend the usage of certain homeopathic creams, especially if you have kids undergoing constitutional remedy who are prone to falls and cuts and bruises, insect bites, sunburn, etc. and the child has just had their remedy.  Best to use a topical administration for those inevitable episodes, in that case.  Even without constitutional care, these are quite useful to keep handy \u2013 Arnica<\/strong>, Calendula<\/strong>, Hypericum<\/strong>, Ruta<\/strong>, Urtica Urens<\/strong>, and Ledum<\/strong>.  Helios <\/a>has a good selection, but if you\u2019d like to support a more local company, the travel pack from the First Aid Creams Company that comes with a repertory can be a good option \u2013 http:\/\/firstaidcreams.com\/product\/first-aid-creams-company-travel-pack-and-booklet-with-repertory\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
