WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?
The word Homeopathy comes from the Greek roots “homoios” and “pathos”, meaning “similar suffering”. Simply put, Homeopathy works on the the principle of similars, whereby the very substance that causes a set of symptoms in its crude form, can address and heal the same symptoms in its diluted and potentized form. For example, homeopathically-prepared coffee is used to treat some kinds of insomnia. Homeopathic ipecac (formerly used in first aid kits to induce vomiting in cases of accidental poisoning) is used to stop vomiting in some acute cases of stomach bugs, or in other vomiting scenarios.
It is common to hear the word “homeopathic” as a general term meaning “natural” or “herbal,” but this is incorrect. “Homeopathy” refers to a specific practice of holistic health care with its own philosophy and methodology.
Origin
Homeopathy is very much a western system of “medicine”, although rooted in ancient eastern medical literature. It was developed by a German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 1700s and has been practiced around the world continuously since that time. It is used widely in numerous countries including Mexico, Canada, USA, and many countries of South America and the European Union.
Remedies
Homeopathic remedy pictures are developed in “provings”, and the remedies themselves are prepared in a manner that removes toxicity that is often found in conventional medicines and drugs, in accordance with the Homeopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States (HPUS) and regulated by the FDA.
